Re: APOPTOSIS
Apocalyptic Fantasy Metal - 69%
Written by Fulgurius on February 19th, 2009
Nature-inspired (at first look) title and natural landscape on the cover of the debut full-length of Apoptosis from France together with the band's name, which originally meant something like "falling of leaves" in Old Greek and now has another meaning in modern science (process of programmed cell death, the ones who want to learn more should check the respective works on biology), - all this fits quite well to the lyrical conception of this album. This conception can be described as "apocalyptic fantasy" and its main theme is about the revenge of (super)natural powers ("gods") on humans for their stupidity. And unlike the majority of "epic" bands, which make conceptual albums, "From Fall to Winter Solstice" is quite short in length (only 31 minutes) and doesn't become boring while listening to it.
As for the musical part, already in the first song it becomes clear, which scheme the band has chosen, - grim, bassy style of playing in the way of (late) Immortal, though with a bit "warmer" sound, mixed with heavy metal styled riffs and melodies. As a result we have some catchy memorable melodies, quite competent musicianship and good work on production. Heavy metal influence also, of course, provoked the presence of guitar solos in most songs on this album (there's even one "bluesy" solo in the song "Feelings"), some quite Iron Maiden-ish passages (like the one in "Burial") and heavy/power metal style of drumming at the faster parts (I can remember only two parts with blast beats - short part in "The Rise of Our Servant" and in the second half of "Through the Eyes of My Fallen Kingdom"). Though, in terms of tempo, epic slow/mid-paced drumming dominates on this album, there are quite many tempo changes throughout the songs, and generally drumming can be called "technical". The other things I should mark out are the use of acoustic guitar (especially noticeable in "Feelings" and "The End is Near") and an interesting approach at vocals, which can be described as more "immature" and "weary" kind of Abbath's or Satyr's style of "grim croaking" that wouldn't fit anywhere else, but fits quite well here in the way as it's pushed forward in the mix and creates an effect of "storytelling".
Quite good and solid work as for the debut, and only my personal preference of more raw and less melodic stuff doesn't let me to put higher mark for it.

"APOPTOSIS - From Fall to Winter Solstice

Re: APOPTOSIS
Tu as pu y jeter une oreille personnellement ?
Merci pour ton avis en tout cas.

Review requests differ from band to band. Some simply push it, request the address and of the CD goes. Others tend to promise a lot but nothing ever arrives by the potential reviewer, not to mention that further questions on the release remain unanswered;
phantom releases I used to call them. Apoptosis tried it another way: before making the deal, I should consider whether the music was something I would be interested in. Actually, I prefer it this way, because it leaves the option to say 'no' and the band can be sure to make a deal with someone who has already got an impression of the art;
it is not this sending something in the blue and wasting money for nothing.
From Fall to Winter Solstice would be Apoptosis' first release and it would also be a full-length. Over thirty-one minutes in length and seven tracks in total, the album does contain neither intro or outro, but opens in a way that the atmosphere is able to unfold itself nevertheless;
not like the shock therapy approach Gräfenstein offered on their Silence Endless piece. Anyway, instrument after instrument enter, the vocals join shortly after the first riffs and one thing becomes obvious already: the band is able to get the music right. There is a flow in the compositions and it stays from the beginning to the end. Despite different approaches it all fits together quite well.
Aggressive, slightly. Melodic, certainly. Atmospheric, undoubtedly. It is not easy to describe the band's performance on this release due to the amount of facets that are offered to the listener. Apoptosis avoid the typical chorus/rhyme scheme, but play (rather) linear but nevertheless catchy music. The former aspect is done quite well and only on some few occasions, it would be those calmer moments, the band would find it difficult to keep up the atmosphere. Beyond these short-coming changes in style, rhythm and additional solos help to keep the band on track. As some amount of energy seems to have been spent on the production, the music comes with a lot of power and as the mix has not been ruined by certain preferences, it is easy to enjoy this piece of art.
There is one phrase by the vocalist, due to its emphasis at the beginning of the track Burial, that always make me chuckle: Dark night, frozen night. It reminds me on In Times Before the Light from the Norwegian band Covenant in which a similar one appears in the second chorus part. Do not know if this is good or bad, but I thought it was worth mentioning it.
An aspect that irritates me constantly when it comes to black metal is the drums. Apoptosis do not use a machine, they have a 'real' drummer, at least according to their MySpace site and such is also mentioned in the booklet, but by listening to the music there is this nagging feeling that it is a machine after all. There reason why I am not convinced after all is the very mechanical way, the extraordinary repetition as well as minimalism which occurs in their play. Be it a real drummer or not, either way, this issue certainly should be overcome on the next release;
the play is quite cool on The Path to Dorang, but generally often to monotonous in the bass-drum. Somehow I would like to see the compositions to have more length. Not that the current ones would end abruptly, but some additional play with the motives is something I would like to see;
less four minutes but rather in the six minutes region. Even though the music is well written and performed, the slight lack of complexity reduces the way the album is perceived.
Final bits and bytes
This release needs some spins until it is able to fascinate entirely. It is not easy these days to find good black metal. Some bands simply try to push it too hard and reach for goals;
they might have problems with achieving;
see Abrahel release or 1888 from The True Endless. For a first attempt this French band did a pretty good job and From Fall to Winter Solstice is loaded with neat ideas, but they want to be discovered. Solo parts, interludes, unconventional song-writing, these would be some aspects that could be brought forth in favour and they easily overshadow the flaws. The whole concept vibrates with some melodies and an atmosphere, which easily grabs the attention of the listener. Despite the harsh vocals nothing of this spills over to the rest of the music. They are well placed, offer not too much lyrics and work fine together with the instruments. So, by summing up all the arguments, a quite positive impression remains.
From Fall to Winter Solstice contains a pro-printed booklet and CD. All lyrics appear in the booklet.
Recommended tracks: The Path to Dorang, Burial.
